Katie Gilroy
Piano Teacher
Upon coming to Peterborough for university in 2018, Katie sought to enhance her piano playing and exploration of guitar and ukulele through local teaching and performance opportunities. Her years-long experience as a self-taught, ear-trained jack-of-all-trades has evolved into a fascination with eclectic, albeit structured learning methods. With experience teaching all ages—from children to older adults—and using multiple music curriculums, she values and prioritizes each student, jumping at opportunities to create fun, inclusive learning environments. Katie believes music should be approachable and accessible; through feedback and insight, she hopes to instil confidence in her students.
Katie has participated in a diverse collection of concert, jazz, garage-type, and musical theatre bands in Ottawa and Peterborough. Some of her highlights include performing in the Ottawa Youth Orchestra Academy for three years as a timpanist under Music Director John Gomez and playing lead piano in a stage production of Legally Blonde. In 2019, she played the synthesizer/keyboard in the Anne Shirley Theatre Company’s production Cabaret. Between gigs, she enjoys living-room jams and improv sessions with friends.
Despite physically playing band and classical music, Katie listens to a diversity of genres: from the big bands of the mid-20th century to counterculture music of the 1960s and modern indie-pop, she possesses a rounded appreciation for all.
